‘Elliot’ cleans up at Outer Critics awards
Billy Elliot the Musical
won the Outer Critics Circle Award for outstanding new Broadway musical Monday.
The show about a young boy from a working-class community who pursues a dance career against all odds also won the prizes for outstanding new score, choreography, lighting design, director of a musical for Stephen Daldry, featured actress in a musical for Haydn Gwynne and featured actor in a musical for Gregory Jbara.
Hair
garnered the outstanding revival of a musical honor and The Toxic Avenger
the prize for outstanding new off-Broadway musical.
Shrek the Musical
star Brian d’Arcy James took home the trophy for outstanding actor in a musical while co-star Sutton Foster shared the outstanding actress in a musical title with Josefina Scaglione of West Side Story.
Shrek
also earned the gongs for outstanding costume and set design.
