Kids With Disabilities Benefit From Marianjoy Golf Camps

WHEATON, Ill., May 14 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- At Marianjoy's Youth Golf Camp, children of all ages and ability levels can learn the fundamentals of the game of golf. While increasing flexibility and range of motion, children also improve their self-confidence as they learn a new skill.

For the second year, Marianjoy invites children with physical disabilities to join its instructors for two golf camps to be held at Oak Meadows Golf Course in Addison, Illinois. Marianjoy therapists and golf pros will lead a week of one-hour sessions to introduce youngsters to the game. Each session offers individualized instruction on the proper mechanics of the golf swing and putting, and movements are adapted to each child's ability.

"What's really great about the camp is that it gives kids with disabilities the opportunity to enjoy a sport that they may not have considered participating in because of their disability," explains Tracy Ekstrom, Marianjoy Therapeutic Recreation Specialist and coordinator of the Marianjoy Therapeutic Golf Program. "But for many of the kids, it becomes much more than just learning the game of golf. The camp helps builds self-esteem and social skills while helping them improve their balance, coordination, and concentration."
