‘Slumdog’ actress loses Mumbai home

Rubina Ali's neighbors in the slums of Mumbai say the Slumdog Millionaire child actress's home has been demolished by railway authorities.

The BBC quoted neighbors of the 9-year-old's family as saying her father, Rafiq Qureshi, was beaten and subsequently hospitalized after he opposed the destruction of his home, which was made of plastic sheets and sticks.

The railway authorities were clearing up the area and in the process they demolished Rubina's house also, a relative told the British network. The clean-up drive is fine but there was a fight and Rafiq sustained injuries.

Officials also recently razed the nearby shack of 10-year-old Azharuddin Mohammed Ismail, another actor who appeared in the Oscar-winning movie, which was set in Mumbai.

Local housing officials had previously promised new homes to the families of Azharuddin and Rubina, but the relocation plan reportedly is still awaiting approval from higher authorities.
