New America Alliance Praises the Nomination of Judge Sonia Sotomayor for U.S. Supreme Court Justice

Posted on: Tuesday, 26 May 2009, 13:57 CDT

DALLAS, May 26 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The New America Alliance (NAA) thanks the Administration for the historic nomination of Judge Sonia Sotomayor to the U.S. Supreme Court. Judge Sotomayor would be the first Hispanic and third female U.S. Supreme Court Justice, if confirmed by the U.S. Senate.

"Judge Sotomayor's extraordinary academic and professional qualifications over some 30 years of public service speak for themselves, and by themselves assure that she will be an outstanding addition to the Supreme Court," said Carlos Loumiet, NAA Chair of the Board. "However, many millions of American Latinos and Latinas today stand just a little bit taller, and have a bit more spring to their gait, because of this historic nomination."

For the past 11 years, Judge Sotomayor has been a judge of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit. Prior to this appointment, she served as a U.S. District Court Judge for the Southern District of New York.

Judge Sotomayor began her legal career in 1979 as an Assistant District Attorney in New York County. In 1984 and until her first judicial appointment, she practiced with the law firm of Pavia & Harcourt as an associate and later partner. Her focus at the firm was on intellectual property issues and international litigation and arbitration of commercial and commodity export trading cases.

A graduate of both Princeton University and Yale Law School, Judge Sotomayor is a Bronx native.

"We need role models for the upcoming generations of Hispanic youth and Judge Sotomayor, whose inspiring story of growing up in a housing project and surmounting numerous hurdles to become a distinguished and respected federal judge, would, as a Supreme Court Justice, serve as a beacon," said John C. Guerra, NAA CEO.

The New America Alliance (NAA) is a national organization comprised of prominent Latino business leaders united to lead the process of American Latino economic empowerment and wealth-building through economic capital, leadership development, strategic philanthropy, and public policy advocacy.
