Gondry’s new doc focuses on his family
Oscilloscope Laboratories announced Tuesday it has acquired the North American distribution rights to Michel Gondry’s documentary,
The Thorn in the Heart.
The movie was described in a news release as a personal look at the life of the Gondry family matriarch — the filmmaker’s aunt Suzette Gondry — and her relationship with her son, Jean-Yves.
The documentary had its world premiere screening at the 2009 Cannes Film Festival. Oscilloscope said it will open the film in theaters, with a DVD and digital release to follow.
Michel is one of the most innovative and creative people in the world, Adam Yauch, head of Oscilloscope Laboratories and a founding member of the Beastie Boys who also goes by the name MCA, said in a statement.
So, it’s great to see him making a sincere doc on a subject that is so close to his heart.
So, I called up my best friend Etienne and told him, ‘Guess who’s distributing my documentary about my aunt?’ Gondry added.
And he said, ‘Who?’ and I said, ‘MCA from Beastie Boys.’ And Etienne said: ‘The Beastie Boy bought your aunt’s documentary? Get the (expletive) out of here!’ and I said, ‘Yeah!’
Michel Gondry began his filmmaking career directing music videos. His feature-film credits include
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind,
The Science of Sleep,
Be Kind Rewind and
Dave Chappelle’s Block Party.
He is currently in pre-production on the superhero flick
The Green Hornet.
