Dow Jones Newswires Wins Two New York Press Club Journalism Awards

Posted on: Thursday, 28 May 2009, 08:00 CDT

NEW YORK, May 28 /PRNewswire/ -- Dow Jones & Company, a News Corporation company (Nasdaq: NWS, NWSA; ASX: NWS, NWSLV), today announced that Dow Jones Newswires has won two Journalism Awards from the New York Press Club in the Spot News and Business Coverage categories.

Dow Jones Newswires was recognized for its immediate response to the collapse of Bear Stearns, publishing more than 30 enterprise articles, columns and features on March 14, 2008, the day the event occurred. The winning entry, The Bear Collapses, was a series of five articles written by reporters and editors in New York and Washington, D.C. The series was the combined effort of Romy Varghese, Marshall Eckblad, Michael Crittenden, Spencer Jakab, Emily Barrett, Michael Derby and Michael Rapoport.

Columnist Maxwell Murphy was awarded for an In The Money series titled "Goodwill Hunting," which was a selection of columns about the massive amounts of goodwill several companies had on their balance sheets. The series predicted the likely write-down of billions of dollars of goodwill, in many cases with remarkable accuracy.

"This recognition by the New York Press Club is evidence of the high-quality journalism that our readers and financial services customers expect from the Dow Jones news organization," said Neal Lipschutz, senior vice president and managing editor, Dow Jones Newswires. "Both Max's columns exploring goodwill and the team coverage of Bear Stearns' collapse are vivid examples of the original and insightful news we deliver day after day to more than 435,000 financial professionals in 66 countries. We're very proud of these awards."

Founded in 1948 as the New York Newspaper Reporters Association, the New York Press Club is a professional organization of members and former members of the news media, devoted to meeting the needs and interests of professional journalists and those in related fields, as well as providing public service to the community.
