‘Up’ holds up, still No. 1
Up
showed it isn’t just a one weekend wonder, fending off two new movies to remain No. 1 in U.S. theaters, Box Office Mojo said Sunday.
The animated adventure featuring the voice of Ed Asner pulled in another estimated $44.24 million and has now tallied $137.32 million since opening last weekend.
That was enough to force The Hangover
and Land of the Lost
to be content with the No. 2 and No. 3 spots in their opening weekends.
The Hangover,
a Todd Phillips-directed comedy about three groomsmen’s weekend of partying in Las Vegas, sold an estimated $43.28 million in tickets, while Land of the Lost,
a science-fiction comedy starring Will Ferrell, managed $19.52 million.
Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian
was No. 4 with $14.65 million in gross receipts, followed by Star Trek
with $8.4 million.
Next in the top 10 were Terminator Salvation
at $8.18 million, Drag Me to Hell
at $7.34 million and Angels & Demons
at $6.5 million.
Another new movie, My Life in Ruins,
a romantic comedy starring Nia Vardalos and Richard Dreyfuss, started at No. 9 with $3.23 million in estimated sales, while Dance Flick
came in 10th with $2 million.
Eliminated from the top tier were X-Men Origins: Wolverine,
Ghosts of Girlfriends Past
and Obsessed.
