Winner of National Anthem Singing Contest to Perform Children's Citizenship Ceremony

WASHINGTON, June 11 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The following is being issued by the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History:

WHAT: The Smithsonian's National Museum of American History will kick off its Flag Day festival with a performance of the national anthem by the winner of the museum's National Anthem Singing Contest and a children's citizenship service.

WHEN: Sunday, June 14

Jordan Shelton, winner, National Anthem Singing Contest

Jordan Shelton of Arvada, Colo., was named the grand prizewinner of the museum's online National Anthem Singing Contest May 19 and will perform the Star-Spangled Banner in the museum's Flag Hall to begin the Flag Day festival. Shelton was chosen from 15 semi-finalists who were selected according to popularity on YouTube, vocal performance, originality and accuracy of lyrics.

During the ceremony, 28 children will receive Certificates of Citizenship after taking an Oath of Allegiance. The children range in age from 8 to 16 and represent 15 countries.

The ceremony kicks off the museum's Flag Day festival, which features a full day of flag-oriented programming. Offerings include flag-folding demonstrations, patriotic music by the Fifes and Drums of York Town and a theater program about flagmaker Mary Pickersgill, the woman who sewed the Star-Spangled Banner.
