New York City Students Narrow the Achievement Gap With McGraw-Hill Education's Everyday Mathematics and IMPACT Mathematics

NEW YORK, June 17 /PRNewswire/ -- New York City students in elementary and middle school have made significant gains at every grade level on the State's annual math test, substantially narrowing the achievement gap with students in the rest of the state. The city has relied on Everyday Mathematics and IMPACT Mathematics from McGraw-Hill Education as part of its reform efforts during the last seven years. These McGraw-Hill programs are part of a new phase of cutting-edge curricula designed to improve student performance and accelerate the development of 21st century skills.

A news release from Mayor Michael Bloomberg's office reported a total of 81.8 percent of New York City students in Grades 3 to 8 are meeting or exceeding grade-level math standards, compared to 88.9 percent of students in the rest of the state. The gap is narrowest in elementary school where students use Everyday Mathematics: 2.3 percentage points in Grade 3, 3.6 points in Grade 4 and 4.0 points in Grade 5. Across Grades 3 to 8, just 7.1 percentage points separate city students from their peers statewide. That gap narrowed nearly by one-third since last year and has been cut almost in half in the last three years. Students use Impact Mathematics in Grades 6-8.

The scores also reflect a continued annual increase. The number of city students in Grades 3-8 meeting or exceeding state math standards in 2007 was 65.1, 74.2 in 2008, and 81.8 percent in 2009.

United Federation of Teachers President Randi Weingarten stated, "Today's announcement speaks to money well spent ... in addition to qualified teachers, schools have used a consistent math curriculum, and the resources to offer students things like extra tutoring and academic intervention services."
