Jude Law’s ‘Hamlet’ set for Broadway

July 1, 2009

British actor Jude Law is taking his version of Hamlet from London’s West End to Broadway, producers announced.

Critics have praised Law’s interpretation of William Shakespeare’s tragic character at London’s Wyndham’s Theater, in a version directed by Michael Grandage, artistic director of the Donmar Warehouse Theater, the BBC reported Wednesday.

Now Hamlet is set for a limited run at New York’s Broadhurst Theater starting Oct. 6, with previews set to begin Sept. 12, the broadcaster said. The play will mark Law’s first Broadway appearance since 1995 when he was nominated for a Tony for Jean Cocteau’s Indiscretions.

The BBC said Hamlet will finish its London run Aug. 22 and then go to Elsinore Castle in Denmark where the play is set before landing in New York.

We feel very privileged to be part of such a vibrant theater community and it is exciting to think that so many people will get to engage with our work and to witness Jude Law’s extraordinary performance, Grandage said in a release.
