NEW YORK, July 23 /PRNewswire/ -- MLB.com "Beat the Streak(R) presented by BURGER KING(R)" -- the free, 15-second-a-day online fantasy game where fans try to surpass one of sports' most revered individual feats -- has reached its 2009 season top prize cap of $1.5 million, the single largest payout in sports fantasy history. Since Opening Day in April, the game has recorded 30 percent more players than in the comparable time period last season and currently has 46 players with active streaks of at least 20 consecutive games.
Beginning June 1, the original $1 million top prize began progressively growing $10,000 each day that a hitting streak of 57 consecutive games was not reached. After nearly two months of daily increases, the MLB.com "Beat the Streak(R) Presented by BURGER KING(R)" top prize will await an eligible winner at its record ceiling of $1.5 million for the remainder of the 2009 season.
How to Play
"Beat the Streak(R) presented by BURGER KING(R)" is a free online fantasy game that gives contestants a chance to win $1.5 million if they can sustain a hitting streak of at least 57 games to surpass the legendary all-time MLB mark of 56 games. Each day, contestants choose a Major League player they think will get a hit. If a selected player delivers a hit on that day, the streak continues and the contestant chooses either another player or the same player the following day. If a selected player ever goes hitless for that day, the streak ends.
Since its inception in April 2001, nearly two million contestants have played and a select few of those have been able to come close to reaching the record streak. In 2007, Michael Karatzia of New Jersey established the current all-time mark with a 49-game streak. Tanner Nielsen of Utah owns the top streak of this season to date at 45 games.
In addition to competing for the top prize, fans can create or join individual groups as a separate contest to seek bragging rights over friends, families, co-workers or whomever they choose to play against.
