WASHINGTON, July 24 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The 2009 Capital Alumni Network (CAN) softball season will conclude over the course of two weekends in August with their 13th annual Softball Tournament. This signature event will attract approximately 1,700 participants and guests to the NASA Goddard Softball Complex in Greenbelt, Md., for three days of fun, sun and of course, some spirited softball.
When the first softball champion, Texas, was crowned in 1997, the CAN co-ed league consisted of 12 teams. Founder and former President of CAN Steve Primrose explains, "No one could have imagined thirteen or fourteen years ago that this alumni league and tournament would become as successful as it has. It has developed into one of the most recognizable alumni events in the entire country." Primrose, who continues to play on his Arizona State University alumni team, added "I still get goose bumps seeing a first-timer show up at the tournament with this look of amazement," and "at the end of the tourney they will call someone from back home and talk about one of the most remarkable weekends they [have] ever had."
With each passing year, the CAN softball tournament has gotten bigger and better, and this year should be no different when the 70 participating teams, including reigning champ James Madison University, lace up their collective spikes on August 8th.
In keeping with tradition, attendees have been asked to bring nonperishable food items to benefit D.C. Central Kitchen's (DCCK) 20th year of service, specifically the Healthy Returns Program Snack Drive. Healthy Returns brings healthy meals and snacks to agencies serving low-income children and at-risk youth throughout the Washington D.C. area. For more information about this program, D.C. Central Kitchen and their other programs visit www.dccentralkitchen.org.
In addition, revenue received from sponsorships will be set aside for the Capital Alumni Network's newly created scholarship fund which will offer financial assistance to area high school seniors planning to attend CAN member schools.
Sponsored by Glaceau Vitaminwater, OnTap Magazine, Union Mortgage Group, NORPress Photo & Printing Services, Dick's Sporting Goods, Summit Marketing and Panera Bread Company, this year's tournament field is comprised of teams representing the following Washington, D.C.
