LOS ANGELES, Aug. 7 /PRNewswire/ — The Royal Mint today officially launched its London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games Commemorative Coinage Program in the U.S. at the American Numismatic Association’s World’s Fair of Money being held this week at the Los Angeles Convention Center.

Jonathan Cockcroft, head of Commemorative Coin Sales for the Royal Mint stated, “We are pleased to announce the launch of the 2012 Commemorative Coin Program for the London Olympic Games, and we are also excited to announce that GovMint.com has been selected to be an authorized distributor for this program. A key factor in choosing GovMint is the firm’s proven success marketing official coins of the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games.”

Nicholas Bruyer, CEO of GovMint.com added, “We are thrilled to be named by the Royal Mint as an authorized distributor. To be partnered with one of the world’s premiere Mints, an institution with over a thousand-year history, is a great honor in and of itself. The Royal Mint has created a spectacular program to commemorate the London Olympic Games. They’ve taken the coin designs to the next level, really cutting edge. The different series will match the interest of virtually every collector. This is one of the most comprehensive Olympic coin programs that I’ve seen in my 35-year career.”

There are many “Firsts” with this 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games coin program. For the first time in history, an official “Handover” coin has been minted, the design of which shows the Olympic Flag being handed over from the 2008 Beijing Games to the London 2012 Games. The Royal Mint is also producing a four-year series of “Countdown” coins, the designs of which show the numerals 3, 2, 1, counting down each year to the London 2012 Games. These coins show colorization for the first time ever on coins of the United Kingdom.

As the Games approach, other exciting programs will be unveiled, including a massive, first-ever 29 coin sports series with each coin commemorating an individual Games event.
