United Football League Introduces New York Sentinels as Team Name & Unveils Uniforms
NEW YORK, Aug. 13 /PRNewswire/ – At a press conference today, United Football League Commissioner Michael Huyghue announced the New York franchise will be named the Sentinels and unveiled innovative team uniforms showcasing the Sentinels’ “Premiere” season colors of black, silver and green. The name “Sentinels” was selected after more than thirty thousand fan entries and interpretation from industry experts and an in-house creative team on what attributes the fans were seeking with their submissions. New York Sentinels Owner Bill Mayer and Sentinels Head Coach Ted Cottrell were also in attendance at the press event.
“It was critical to us that we took our time in selecting team names that we felt best reflected the local community while simultaneously defining the personality of the team,” said Commissioner Huyghue. “When selecting a name for the New York franchise, we wanted to pay homage to the individuals who protect the city including the NYPD, FDNY, the Port Authority and so many other dedicated organizations who bravely watch over the city.”
Previously, the UFL announced Miami-based GameWear Team Sports as the League’s official uniform supplier. Award-winning designer Ron Caruso of Purepartner created all the teams’ uniforms using derivatives of the official League logo for all the designs while making each one distinctive.
“The inspiration for the ‘Premiere’ season uniform design comes directly from the UFL shield and its foundation colors which represent ‘green grass’, ‘blue sky’ and silver for innovation,” said Caruso. “Throughout the uniforms, we used the dimensional ‘arc’ of the shield on the chest and supporting ‘arcs’ on the sleeves and pants. The unique font of the numbers reinforces the shield’s classic bold typeface with angles and dimensional treatments conveying depth and motion. The four uniform designs work together in a unified branded system, providing manufacturing efficiencies while allowing each team to retain its own unique and differentiated character.”
Yesterday, the United Football League announced the Florida Tuskers. Earlier in the week, the United Football League introduced the Las Vegas Locomotives and the California Redwoods. A complete listing of team names and photos of uniforms will be available on the League’s website, www.ufl-football.com, along with pictures and video from the press events.
“We are extremely pleased with the names selected for all of our teams and the overall ‘Premiere’ season uniform design,” said Frank Vuono, COO of the UFL. “Name selection for a new sports franchise can be an arduous process having to take into account the disqualification of many great possibilities due to trademark and copyright infringements. There was a team of experts including Charley Inc., Bendigo Company, GameWear Team Sports, Ron Caruso and Purepartner who assisted in the name selection and uniform design processes and we are grateful for all of their hard work.”
The UFL launched its Name the Team Campaign with the redesign of its website in February. From that time, more than thirty thousand entries were submitted. Fans who submitted the selected names will be notified and given the appropriate credit.
Mayer also announced that the Sentinels will play its three home games in its “Premiere” season at Giants Stadium at the Meadowlands Sports Complex on October 29(th), Hofstra University on November 4(th) and Rentschler Field in Hartford on November 14(th).
“In an effort to reach fans across the tri-state region, we are playing at multiple stadiums in our ‘Premiere’ season,” said Mayer. “The fan interest for the New York are a team has been immense and we want to expand our reach so that all fans may attend a ‘home’ game and be able to embrace the New York Sentinels as their team.”
The New York Sentinels’ first game will be in Orlando on October 10(th) and will be broadcast on HDNet at 6:00 PM Pacific. The Sentinels’ first home game is October 29(th) against the Redwoods at Giants Stadium and will be broadcast on VERSUS.
