Younger cast expected for ‘Night Music’

The new Broadway production of A Little Night Music in New York will feature a younger cast than its previous incarnation, industry sources say.

Unidentified industry sources said compared with the 1973 cast of the Tony Award-winning musical comedy, the forthcoming Music production has been auditioning actresses in their 30s, reported Friday.

The 1973 production of Music featured 50-year-old actress Glynis Johns as it lead.

Meanwhile, the New York Post reported Welsh actress Catherine Zeta-Jones, 39, has been tabbed to succeed Johns as stage actress Desiree Armfeldt in Music.

Veteran stage actress Angela Lansbury has been hired to play Armfeldt's mother, Madame Armfeldt, in the production, the Post said.

An unidentified show spokesman said an official announcement regarding the cast of the new Music production, which is to open in December, is forthcoming.
