Actor Khan denies publicity stunt claims

August 22, 2009

Indian actor Shah Rukh Khan says his conflict with authorities at Liberty International Airport in Newark, N.J., was not a publicity stunt.

The popular Bollywood actor said being questioned by U.S. immigration officials at the New Jersey airport was not an attempt to draw attention to his new movie, My Name Is Khan, which is about the problems faced by a Muslim man in the United States, Variety reported Friday.

I don’t want to sound pompous, Khan said of the Aug. 14 incident. But Shah Rukh Khan doesn’t need any publicity.

The customs incident prompted some of Khan’s fans in India to burn U.S. flags and effigies of U.S. President Barack Obama in protest, Variety said.

U.S. customs officials insist the airport questioning, which took place after Khan’s luggage was reportedly lost by British Airways, was routine.
