'The Power to Play - from Trash to Treasure': Children's Toy Exhibit at L.A.'s Museum of Tolerance

Posted on: Thursday, 27 August 2009, 07:40 CDT

RICHMOND, Va., Aug. 27 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- What do broken flip-flop sandals, scrap pieces of plastic bags, twigs and string have in common for children in Africa, Asia and the Americas? The items were used by children to create toy sailboats so they would have something to play with.

Children also have taken discarded plastic bags and heavy twine, to create soccer balls and prove that they have an amazing ability to face adversity with creativity and passion.

That resiliency is reflected in ChildFund International's exhibit of more than 350 handcrafted toys by children from around the world. The Museum of Tolerance will showcase the toy exhibit at a special event 1:30- 4 p.m., Sept. 13.

ChildFund International President and CEO Anne Lynam Goddard and MOT Director Liebe Geft will launch the toy exhibit with a ribbon cutting at 1:30 p.m. They will be joined by Shauntay Hinton, former Miss USA and ChildFund International sponsored child, who will share her inspiring journey.

Goddard will speak on ChildFund's work with deprived, excluded and vulnerable children around the world. "ChildFund International has long recognized play as essential to childhood development," said Goddard. "We are sharing this toy collection as a visible demonstration of how the power to play helps children thrive and become leaders of enduring change in their communities and the world."

During the family event Sept. 13, the Museum will hold workshops for children to create toys made from recycled materials donated by a local "green" toy company.

The toys are on display Sept. 13 through Dec. 31 at the Museum of Tolerance, 9786 W. Pico Blvd., Los Angeles.

ChildFund is sharing the toy collection with major museums across the United States. It will next travel to the Breman Museum in Atlanta. For more information about the toys, visit the Web site at www.ChildFund.org/toys.
