MIAMI, Sept. 3 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Thursday, September 10, 2009, St. Thomas University will mark a momentous point in its history with the official dedication of the Fernandez Family Center for Leadership and Wellness. The 62,000 sq. ft. multipurpose facility will house the University's world-renowned Sports Administration Program, the Bobcat athletics department, The Miniaci Family Lead Now Program, basketball, volleyball and intramural sports, a state-of-the-arts fitness and wellness center and a wide-array of community-oriented events.
"It is with the greatest sense of pride that we dedicate this beautiful facility," said Rev. Monsignor Franklyn M. Casale, President, St. Thomas University. "Designed to develop both physical wellness and academic leadership, the Fernandez Center provides our students with one of the most cutting-edge athletic and learning centers in the area and serves as a symbol of the University's transformation into one of Florida's leading hubs for higher education."
The Fernandez Center's uniqueness is the fusion of games, wellness and community-oriented activities with what is considered a distinct sports laboratory for college students interested in management or owning sports facilities or business ventures. STU is nationally acclaimed for its sports administration degrees, which focus on the business behind the games and include Bachelors, Masters and a joint degree with St. Thomas' School of Law. Named for the family of Miguel "Mike" Fernandez, chairman of MBF Healthcare Partners and one of Florida's leading healthcare tycoons, whose donation spurred its creation, the Fernandez Family Center for Leadership and Wellness was designed to be a center of student activity and leadership development.
The official dedication ceremony, which begins at 10:00 a.m. and is open to the public, will feature blessings from The Most Reverend John C. Favalora, Archbishop of Miami and Monsignor Casale; exposition basketball and volleyball games; a tailgate lunch and tours of the new facility.
