‘Sharks’ Presented by Jean-Michel Cousteau Creates Major Waves at the Orlando Science Center

September 8, 2009

ORLANDO, Fla., Sept. 8 /PRNewswire/ — Experience an astonishing up-close encounter with the lions and tigers of the ocean when “Sharks” comes to the giant screen of the Dr. Phillips CineDome at the Orlando Science Center. Come face-to-face with a multitude of shark species, including the Great White, Hammerhead, and Whale shark. The film premieres during an ocean-themed Cocktails & Cosmos social event on Saturday, September 19, 2009, and daily public viewings continue through Spring 2010. The event will feature a special appearance by the film’s director of photography, Gavin McKinney.

Presented by renowned ocean explorer Jean-Michel Cousteau, “Sharks” is a 42-minute giant screen documentary that aims to rehabilitate the public image of sharks and to help put an end to the steady decline of the global shark population. Witness them as they really are — not wicked man-eating creatures, but wild, fascinating and endangered animals that have been in existence since a million years before the dinosaurs roamed the earth.

Sharks also suffer from their historically negative reputation. For centuries mankind has feared them, primarily because of the terrifying tales told by sailors. Since the 1980s, the media has played a significant role in perpetuating the false image of these formidable fish as frightening monsters. Today, when most hear of sharks, their thoughts immediately turn to the man-eating beast portrayed in the movie “Jaws”. But the truth is somewhat different. Of the 100 shark attacks reported annually, only 12 are fatal. More people die every year from bee stings!

“Sharks” will premiere with screenings at 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. on September 19 during Cocktails & Cosmos, the Science Center’s quarterly social event. In addition to the film, guests will enjoy Polynesian style entertainment, photography displays, and oceanic exhibits to engage them about life under the sea. The event’s guest of honor is Gavin McKinney, the director of photography for “Sharks”. He will be introducing the film before each screening and available for questions and autographs immediately following. Credited with more than 15,000 hours underwater and a resume that includes several James Bond movies and James Cameron’s The Abyss, McKinney will provide a charming perspective on his undersea adventures.

“Sharks” is included in general admission, which is $17 for adults and $12 for children (ages 3-11). This ticket includes access to all exhibits, like the new A-Mazing Sea (which also premieres on September 19), and other giant screen films.
