Israel’s Top Financial Daily Names Arison ‘Woman of the Year’
TEL AVIV, Israel, Sept. 8 /PRNewswire/ — Israel’s leading financial daily newspaper, Globes, today named Arison Group Chairman Shari Arison its “Woman of the Year.” Among the reasons for her selection, the newspaper noted that “this year she proved she has genuine business power and leadership ability. Arison showed that she possesses that rare quality found in leaders: the ability to withstand pressure.”
In particular, Globes cited Arison’s fortitude in her faceoff with the Bank of Israel over issues of fundamental shareholder rights as one of the reasons for her recognition.
“She followed her chosen path, no matter who (and there were many) tried to stand in her way. The woman who resisted automatic compliance with the Bank of Israel’s demand took a step unprecedented in both Israel and the world when she refused to oust the chairman of Bank Hapoalim before receiving a reasoned explanation for the demand,” the newspaper wrote. “Arison, the most outstanding woman in the Israeli economy, displayed unusual independence this year and reached the peak of a process that many had thought would not occur.”
The newspaper in particular noted her strong independence, values and ethics in conveying its accolade.
“She threw off all the fetters her father had placed upon her and emerged as one of the few figures in the Israeli economy that went with the truth all the way to the end, showing the kind of independence and integrity that has not been seen here for a long while,” said the newspaper.
Globes pointed out that in a public opinion survey asking respondents to name the most influential woman in Israel, some 25 percent chose Arison, putting her in first place. In another question about the most admired woman in Israel, Arison placed second after Tzipi Livni, the leader of the Kadima Party who ran for prime minister earlier this year.
This is the second time Arison was named “Woman of the Year” by Globes. The last time the honor was conveyed was in 2007.
