Wilmington Oktoberfest Moves and Improves

September 9, 2009

WILMINGTON, N.C., Sept. 9 /PRNewswire/ — The organizers of the 8th Annual Wilmington Oktoberfest today announced their expanded lineup of events and activities to occur October 16 and 17, 2009, at their new location, Racine Commons Shopping Center. The event has moved from Independence Mall and will now benefit Child Advocacy & Parenting Place (CAPP) Center in Wilmington.

Festival mascot, “Anton”, delivered the announcement in thick Bavarian accent.

Features like the Kids Zone have been expanded and events such as the Weiner Dog Race – a humorous show of the dachshund breed popular at Oktoberfest events – highlight this year’s improvements.

Festival-goers will enjoy the authentic German sounds of the Harbour Towne Fest Band while eating brats with sauerkraut and drinking imported beers. A variety of souvenirs will be available. “The secret of the band,” says meister Anton, “is that they have more fun the those who watch them.” Anton continued, “But that fun is contagious, and soon everyone is in zee act.”

It all starts with the ceremonial delivery of the “first keg of Oktoberfest” on Friday, October 16, at 4:00 P.M. sharp at Racine Commons Shopping Center. A horse-drawn wagon, with band-on-board, will bring the keg down Racine Drive and to the mainstage. All present for the ceremony will enjoy free cover charge to the opening night of festivities. Main sponsor, Fat Tony’s Italian Pub, is providing the venue for the event.

Anton will be on-hand for autographs both days, handing out balloons and teaching the shy how to dance. The festival website www.WilmingtonOktoberfest.com offers a crash-course in at least one such dance.
