Memoirs of a Nomad Offers Many World Lessons
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla., Sept. 15 /PRNewswire/ — In the midst of war, people across nations find their hopes and dreams are shattered. In the gripping true-life tale “A Nomad’s Journey” (published by iUniverse), Atilla Bektore recounts his family’s struggles through the aftermath of World War I and the moving boundaries of surrounding nations. His story chronicles the memories of two lifetimes — his and his father’s — and events of the 20th century.
Shevki Bektore dreams of being a teacher in his ancestral land of the Crimea. When the horrifying events of World War I alter his plans, he joins countless millions of others whose hopes and dreams are shattered in the maelstrom of war and revolution. Arrested in 1932 on trumped-up charges of treason, Shevki spends over 22 years of his life as an inmate in Stalin’s Gulags in Central Asia and Siberia. Shevki’s compelling story of survival, combined with his son’s, Atilla Bektore, endurance in the face of World War II, Stalin’s iron rule, and the turmoil of the 1960s and 1970s, creates a stunning memoir of these two extraordinary men.
“A Nomad’s Journey” is told within the context of contemporary world events with major milestones of world history that include World War I and the fall of world empires, the birth of Bolshevik Russia, World War II, the demise of the Soviet Union and the rise of the United States as the sole world superpower. Bektore writes:
“Our stories, intertwined with lives of the rest of our family, encompass the Soviet Union, Soviet Central Asia, Turkey, and the United States of America during a period of great upheavals, of tens of millions of dead and wounded, and of destruction probably unmatched in the history of the world. The First World War – The Great War, or The War to End All Wars – led to the downfall of the Russian Empire and the rise of the Soviet Union, the great experiment in Communist utopianism that would, in many ways, determine the history of the twentieth century.”
