The McGraw-Hill Companies Named for Third Consecutive Year as One of the Top 10 Best Companies by Working Mother Magazine

Posted on: Tuesday, 22 September 2009, 08:23 CDT

NEW YORK, Sept. 22 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- The McGraw-Hill Companies (NYSE: MHP) today announced it has been selected for the top 10 of the "Working Mother 100 Best Companies" by Working Mother magazine for the third consecutive year. This is also the fifth consecutive year that the company has been honored as a "100 Best Company" by the magazine.

Working Mother said that companies making this year's list have "unwavering dedication to family-friendly benefits" and "defied expectations" with pioneering programs to support families in the face of a challenging economy. The magazine noted, for example, that just 35 percent of companies nationwide offer health insurance to part-time employees and just 25 percent of companies offer on-site lactation programs while there is nearly universal support for these programs among employers of the Working Mother 100 Best Companies.

The Corporation was recognized for flexible work arrangements and part-time options; access to health insurance for part-time employees; child and dependent care options; eldercare and special needs case management; fitness club discounts; and parental leave policies that provide three paid weeks for time off related to the birth or adoption of a child.

"We take a special pride in this recognition, because it highlights our commitment to offering a supportive and dynamic environment where the most talented people want to come and work," said Harold McGraw III, chairman, president and CEO of The McGraw-Hill Companies. "Our ability to deliver the information and analysis that people, businesses and entire societies need to grow and prosper would not be possible without our most valuable asset: our employees. And to help our customers achieve their best, our employees must be at their best, which is why we strive to give them the support they need to meet their responsibilities at home and on the job."

"The Working Mother 100 Best Companies stand head and shoulders above the rest," said Carol Evans, CEO, Working Mother Media. "For example, in the last year, we saw the number of companies nationwide offering flexible work arrangements diminish five percentage points, while the 100 Best Companies stayed steady at 100 percent. The 100 Best provide leadership where and when we need it most, furnishing a framework of support for working families during good times and bad. If all companies adopted these best practices, more families could weather the economic storm."

Starting today, people from all over the country will be able to expand their network of contacts and share information with others who are also trying to balance their work and personal lives through the online social networking site Facebook. Working Mother's Work Life Congress Facebook Fan Page, sponsored by The McGraw-Hill Companies, provides an online community where members can discuss topics relevant to them, highlights stories about the top employers recognized by Working Mother and offers a unique application called "Li-Fi." Li-Fi, which will be available next week, acts as an online calendar that lets users track all their home-life activities, like doctors' appointments and teacher conferences. The McGraw-Hill Companies was selected for the 2009 Working Mother 100 Best Companies based on an extensive application with more than 500 questions. The application included detailed questions about workforce, compensation, child care, flexibility programs, leave policies and more. It also checked the usage, availability and tracking of programs, as well as the accountability of managers who oversee them. Seven areas were measured and scored: workforce profile, benefits, women's issues and advancement, child care, flexible work, parental leave and company culture.
