Stuart Lazarus, Run to Remember National Director, Will Run All Night Through Bourbon Country

Posted on: Monday, 5 October 2009, 10:05 CDT

ALEXANDRIA, Va., Oct. 5 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Lacing up his own shoes for a unique running experience, Stuart Lazarus, 60, the founder and national director of the National Hospice Foundation's Run to Remember program, will be hitting the ground running on October 9-10, 2009. He will participate in the inaugural Bourbon Chase, a 200-mile relay on the Bourbon Trail in Kentucky.

Lazarus, who hails from Columbus, Ohio, and his 10 teammates will take turns running five to eight mile legs during their overnight journey through the Bluegrass State. To cover the total distance, each runner will run at least three legs.

"The runners have a strict rotation we must follow or be disqualified," said Lazarus. "So, each of us must be prepared to shoulder the burden of our legs of the race -- regardless of the state of our actual legs!"

When asked what motivated him to sign up for the 200-mile Bourbon Chase, Lazarus replied, "Relay races like this are becoming more popular. I wanted to experience firsthand what these races are like. I suspect these races will turn out to be terrific options for our Run to Remember participants. Hospice supporters can assemble a team -- typically 12 people -- and really get into planning and fundraising, all the while shining a spotlight on their local hospice."

Lazarus founded Run to Remember (www.runtoremember.org) in 2002 as an athletic fundraising program to benefit hospice. He also established the program as a way to honor the memory of his mother, Frances Lazarus, who died in her sixties of colon cancer.

The National Hospice Foundation has embraced the program and considers it a crucial component of its fundraising efforts to advance hospice care in this country.

Thus far in 2009, 131 people are signed up Run to Remember, training for races all around the country from 5Ks to marathons. Participants are actively fundraising and 75% have designated local hospices to share the fundraising proceeds with NHF.

Lazarus himself is doing the Bourbon Chase as a Run to Remember. He is raising funds to split between NHF and a New York City hospice that cared for a friend. See Lazarus' fundraising page at: http://www.active.com/donate/runtoremember2009/bourbon.
