T.J. Martell Foundation's Annual Awards Gala Brings Together Legends and Leaders for AIDS, Leukemia and Cancer Research

Posted on: Monday, 5 October 2009, 13:11 CDT

NEW YORK, Oct. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- The T.J. Martell Foundation's 34th annual Gala, a celebratory evening of fundraising which serves to provide research to find cures and treatments for leukemia, cancer and AIDS, will take place Wednesday, October 28th at the Hilton New York Hotel.

The T.J. Martell Foundation for Leukemia, Cancer and AIDS Research was founded in 1975 by Tony Martell. Martell's son, T.J., was a young victim of leukemia; before his death he made his father promise that he would raise $1 million to fight the disease. Since then, the Foundation has provided more than $225 million to support innovative medical research in fighting these diseases.

"For 34 years, we have raised funds for groundbreaking leukemia, cancer and AIDS research. The proceeds from our Gala will allow us to provide our research facilities with the funds vital to their scientific achievement," said Tony Martell, founder of the T.J. Martell Foundation.

This year's event will headline Willie Nelson, jazz great Dianne Reeves, up and coming artist Kristina Train and a special posthumous tribute, the first ever Legend award, to Michael Jackson, the single largest donor in the T.J. Martell Foundation's 34-year history.

The T.J. Martell Foundation honors the work of humanitarians from various industries at its Annual Awards Gala. The award recipients for 2009 include Jon Luther, Executive Chairman of Dunkin Brands, for Humanitarian of the Year; Bruce Lundvall, President of Blue Note Records, with a Lifetime Artistic Achievement Award; John Esposito, President of Warner Music Nashville with the Spirit of Excellence Award.

The 34th Annual Awards Gala will take place Wednesday, October 28th, 2009 at the Hilton Hotel in New York, located at 1335 Avenue of the Americas. Cocktails will begin at 6 p.m. and dinner will commence at 7:30 p.m. To purchase tickets or to make a donation, please visit www.TJMartellFoundation.org. To make a quick and easy $5 donation, text "TJ" to 90999. Continental Airlines is the official airline of the T.J. Martell Foundation.
