WINFIELD, Ill., Nov. 2 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- U.S. News & World Report announced online recently that Central DuPage Hospital (CDH) of Winfield, Ill., has been listed as one of its top 17 hospitals in the nation for both nursing care and patient satisfaction.
To determine the top hospitals nationwide, U.S. News evaluates the quality of care in nearly 5,000 U.S. hospitals. The resulting list of 174 America's Best Hospitals was named by U.S. News earlier this year. The publication then ranked the top 10 percent of the finalist hospitals by evaluating patient survey results. Both lists are posted online at www.usnews.com. CDH is the only Chicago-area hospital to be ranked on both lists.
CDH has been named to U.S. News' America's Best Hospitals in orthopaedics since 2007 and has also been recognized nationally as a Thomson-Reuters 100 Top Hospital for the past three years. In 2008, Advance for Nurses magazine awarded the hospital's team of Advanced Practice Nurses their Best Nurses Team award. "We honestly don't strive to win awards," says CDH President and CEO Luke McGuinness. "We commit ourselves to excellent patient care and the awards follow."
Chief Nursing Officer Deb O'Donnell, RN, shares CDH's formula for success. "We committed to focus on creating a distinctive patient experience as an organization several years ago. With healthcare reform politics dominating the news, we must not forget the most important factor - the relationship between a patient and a caregiver. That's why this recognition is a great tribute to each employee's commitment and dedication - because the award is coming directly from our patients."
In the survey CDH was among the top of America's Best Hospitals in the percentage of patients who felt nurses were "always courteous, listened carefully and gave clear explanations." Similarly, CDH was among the top percent of patients who rated their overall care a 9 or 10 (10=highest, 0=lowest).
This is the first year that U.S. News has combined the ranking of clinical performance and advanced services that characterizes its Best Hospitals list with patient satisfaction as measured by the HCAHPS survey, sponsored by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid. The HCAHPS survey contains patient perspectives on care and ratings on eight key topics: communication with doctors, communication with nurses, responsiveness of hospital staff, pain management, communication about medicines, discharge information, cleanliness of the hospital environment, and quietness of the hospital environment.
