Mendocino County Celebrates Heritage Days April 30-May 31

MENDOCINO, Calif., March 29 /PRNewswire/ — During the 7th annual Heritage Days, April 30-May 31, more than two dozen museums, organizations and historical societies throughout Mendocino County are sponsoring walks, lectures, exhibits and displays to share the area’s rich history. This 2010 celebration will include some favorite events of previous years including cemetery tours held this year in Ukiah, Fort Bragg and Mendocino. Enjoy heritage roses, hear fascinating stories about local history, talks about preserving priceless heritage and attend the popular Ford House Progressive Dinner.

Temples and Churches

Docent-led walks will take you to unusual historic places and rarely open historic buildings. Visit the 1864 Temple of Kwan Tai, the Mendocino Masonic Temple (built in 1869) and see St. Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church in Fort Bragg, an Arts and Crafts “jewel” built in 1912. A talk is scheduled on “How Preservation Happened in Mendocino.”

Both Point Cabrillo and Point Arena Light Stations are offering lantern tours and walks. Special access to see the inner workings of our Mendocino Coast Lighthouses is offered only a few times each year. Also hear the “First-Hand Adventures of a Lady Light Keeper.”

On the Trail

New events during Heritage Days of Mendocino County 2010 will include “Walking the Coastal Trail on the Historic Mill Site” in Fort Bragg and “It’s a Grand Olde Car Show” in Mendocino. During Memorial Weekend hear a talk about “Looking back: the Fascinating Alleys of Fort Bragg” and enjoy the 15th annual Soroptimist Quilt Show.

At the Kelley House Museum, Marine Historian Louis Hough will spin tales of ships and shipwrecks. Unusual real ranch experiences are planned by the Mendocino County Museum in Willits including tall-tales and cowboy lore. Interesting stories about “Noyo: Old and New” will be told by two local speakers.

Many other exhibits and displays are planned including a Small Craft (Boat) Show, small boat models, historic maps, an Historic Neighborhood Walk and a Cemetery visit in Ukiah, an old School House in Booneville and much more.
