‘My Teacher, My Future’ aims to inspire the teachers of tomorrow

MUNSTER, Ind., April 8 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ — It was the ultimate in Hoosier Hysteria! Butler University’s march through the NCAA tournament had not just Indiana, but all of America, riveted. Joining the hoop-la was the school’s president Dr. Bobby Fong, who is also a contributor to the new book, “My Teacher, My Future: Indiana’s Best and Brightest Remember Their Favorite Teacher.”

Funded by the Educational Research Foundation of Indiana, Inc., “My Teacher, My Future” is a tribute to the teachers of yesterday who have guided the professionals of today. Its goal is to reach out to students who are undecided about their future and encourage them to consider education as a career choice.

Dr. Fong’s favorite teacher was Mrs. Marjorie Davis who taught at Lincoln Elementary School in Oakland, California. “Mrs. Davis was legendary among a cadre of teachers who guided a generation of Chinese immigrant children into the American mainstream. They taught us English as a second language and encouraged our academic inspirations,” Dr. Fong writes. “When she retired, all of Chinatown threw a banquet in her honor.”

Jim Davis of “Garfield” fame was a budding cartoonist when he caught the eye of Paull McCoy, the art teacher at Fairmount High School. “Paull was an artist’s artist. He sported a flat top and a goatee,” Davis writes. “Paull pushed me for four years in high school, never quite satisfied with my output… Paull’s in his 90s now. He toured the studio recently. He no longer has the flat top. He has a ponytail.”

The book’s 80 contributors also include Sen. Richard Lugar, Gov. Mitch Daniels, Purdue University athletic director Morgan Burke, and retired NFL great and CBS broadcaster Irv Cross.

“My Teacher, My Future” was compiled by Dr. Robert J. Krajewski, Ed.D., executive director of the Educational Research Foundation, a federally chartered 501(C)3 not-for-profit foundation. Dr. Krajewski has been involved in education in Indiana for 60 years and was superintendent of schools in East Chicago for 17 years. He also served on the Indiana State Board of Education and was Indiana’s Acting State Superintendent of Schools in 1985.
