Conference: The Future of Egypt

GREENWICH, Conn., May 11 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ — On May 15, 2010, The ALLIANCE OF EGYPTIAN AMERICANS, in conjunction with Alwan for the Arts and City University of New York will co-sponsor a conference on the FUTURE OF EGYPT AS A CONSTITUTIONAL DEMOCRACY. The conference will feature some of the most prominent intellectual and academics in Egypt and the United States. It will examine the political, economic, social and cultural developments in Egypt during the past half century, leading to the current state of affairs, and explore the possibilities for the future, conscious of history and taking into account Egypt’s central role in — and impact upon — developments in the region at large, both positive and negative.

9:45 A.M.: The Legal Foundation of Modern Egypt and the Current Constitutional Crisis; Islamic Legal Theory, Citizenship, Rights and Participation

11:45 A.M.: Egypt: A Historical Perspective and Current Crisis of Legitimacy; Ramifications of Structural Adjustments in Egypt

1:45 P.M.: Internal Dynamics of the Egyptian Body-Politics & the Political Economy of Structural Adjustments in Egypt

3:00 P.M.: Aesthetics, Culture and Modernization

All sessions will take place at City University of New York (CUNY) Graduate Center, Baisley Powell Elebash Recital Hall, 365 Fifth Avenue, New York City, NY 10016

Registration begins at 9:00 A.M., followed by introductory remarks at 9:30 A.M.
