First-Ever ‘You CAN Do The Rubik’s Cube’ Tournament To Be Held in Central Park

June 9, 2010

NEW YORK, June 9 /PRNewswire/ — The New York City Department of Parks & Recreation will host the first ever “You CAN Do The Rubik’s Cube” competition in Central Park, where 30 students from all five boroughs will compete for the fastest time to solve the Rubik’s Cube. As the Rubik’s Cube turns 30 years old this year, the famous puzzle is reinventing itself as a math and science tool in classrooms and afterschool programs across the country. The new “You CAN Do The Rubik’s Cube” program is helping students learn problem-solving, teamwork, perseverance and math skills like perimeter, volume, area, and algorithms.

“What could be finer than offering kids the chance to exercise their brain power in this celebration of skill and perseverance?” said Parks Commissioner Adrian Benepe. “Parks’ mission is to cultivate a healthy mind and body in young New Yorkers, and we are delighted to host the Citywide Rubik’s Cube tournament in the city’s most famous green square, Central Park.”

The competition will take place on Thursday, June 10 at Victorian Gardens at Wollman Rink in Central Park from 12:00 – 3:00 p.m. EDT. There will be two divisions – one division consisting of students solving the Rubik’s Cube with the help of the new You CAN Do The Rubik’s Cube solution guide, and one division of students solving the Rubik’s Cube on their own. The winners from each division will be honored during an awards ceremony that will take place at 4:00 p.m. EDT.

The Parks Afterschool Program seeks to enhance communities and enrich the lives of children in the City of New York by providing safe, supportive, and structured environments that support overall health and well-being. Parks Afterschool offers quality educational, recreational, and cultural programs that promote the social, physical, intellectual, and emotional development of children and youth. The New York City Department of Parks & Recreation has been using the You CAN Do The Rubik’s Cube in its after school programs as a fun and educational way to boost self-esteem and confidence in students in the Bronx, Queens, Manhattan, Brooklyn and Staten Island.

The final results and images from the event will be announced on the You CAN Do The Rubik’s Cube Facebook page. To learn more about the You CAN Do The Rubik’s Cube program and how to host a local Rubik’s Cube tournament please visit www.YouCanDoTheCube.com.
