‘XXX’ sequel marks the spot atop video charts

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - Haste doesn't always
make waste. Sony slammed the box office bomb "XXX: State of the
Union" into video stores a mere 88 days after it opened in
theaters and was able to ride the theatrical wave to the bank.

The action sequel was the top seller and the top rental
during its first week in stores, replacing Warner's
"Constantine" on both counts during the week ended July 31.

On the sales side, "XXX" sold nearly twice as many copies
as "Constantine" did in its sophomore week, while on the rental
end, the sequel generated a respectable $12.2 million, or
nearly half its total theatrical gross of $26.1 million.

Other new theatricals on the charts included "The Upside of
Anger" (New Line), which debuted at No. 4 on the sales chart
and at No. 3 on the rental chart, and "King's Ransom" (New
Line), which entered the sales chart at No. 7 and the rental
chart at No. 11. On a percentage basis, the urban comedy
"King's Ransom" was the biggest winner, generating an estimated
$3.4 million in rentals against box office sales of $4 million.
