Montegrappa Issues Specialty Luxury Pen Set to Honor Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier

January 20, 2011

LOS ANGELES, Jan. 20, 2011 /PRNewswire/ — Montegrappa, Italy’s most revered manufacturer of fine writing instruments, today announced a companion luxury pen set to the acclaimed “Icons” writing instruments honoring the legendary Muhammad Ali. Commemorating the 35th Anniversary of one of his greatest fights, “A Thrilla in Manila,” the new set has been authorized by both Muhammad Ali Enterprises and Joe Frazier.

Held at the Araneta Coliseum in Quezon City, Philippines on October 1st, 1975, the fight is regarded by many as one of the greatest of the 20th century. The fight represented the culmination of the rivalry between Ali and Frazier in order to determine who was the true Heavyweight Champion of the World after Ali was stripped of the title over his refusal to join the armed forces when drafted during the Vietnam War.

To commemorate this historic bout, Montegrappa created the pen set with one writing implement for Muhammad Ali represented by a fountain pen and the other piece for Joe Frazier represented by a roller ball. Beautifully engraved by hand, etched with burin by Montegrappa’s renowned artisans, the pens will feature a cartouche with the silhouettes of each boxer, enhanced by hand-etched reproductions of their signatures and motifs of laurel leaves.

An additional enhancement for both pen aficionados and boxing fans alike is the inclusion of a first-hand account of the event from the referee of that historic fight, Carlos “Sonny” Padilla, Jr., which is reproduced in the “A Thrilla in Manila” owner’s manual.

Issued in a limited amount of 35 sets, the gold version features an autographed framed picture showing Ali, Frazier and Padilla along with a special plexiglass display into which the pens can be placed. The silver edition will be offered in a series of 350 and will arrive in lavish boxes featuring a three-dimensional boxing glove forming the lid. Inside is a pad on which the Ali and the Frazier pens will rest. A certificate of authenticity will accompany all pen sets and will carry the original signature of Carlos Padilla Jr., the referee of “A Thrilla in Manila” and of Gianfranco Aquila, Chairman of Montegrappa.

To celebrate this magnificent luxury pen set and honor the 35th anniversary of the historic “A Thrilla in Manila” boxing match, Joe Frazier will be appearing in the Montegrappa booth at the Philadelphia Pen Show on Saturday, January 22, 2011 at the Sheraton Philadelphia City Center Hotel located at 201 North 17th Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, 19103.
