Detroit Media Partnership Adds Jobs To Open Local Consumer Solutions Center

DETROIT, Jan. 31, 2011 /PRNewswire/ — Starting soon, if you need help with any print or electronic product of the Detroit Free Press or The Detroit News, you’ll find it closer to home.

Detroit Media Partnership today announced it is opening a new customer service center at its Sterling Heights operations facility in March. That means calls to the newspapers will no longer be routed to a call center in Tulsa, Oklahoma. The opening of the new center will create 34 new jobs.

The new, technically advanced call center will handle all customer service questions for readers of The Detroit News and Detroit Free Press, including the newspapers’ electronic editions and web sites. The center will also serve readers of the Livingston County Daily Press & Argus and other products managed by Detroit Media Partnership.

“We’re very pleased to bring these jobs back to Metro Detroit,” said Susie Ellwood, CEO of Detroit Media Partnership. “But beyond that, I know the return of a locally staffed call center will significantly benefit our readers because they will be speaking to well-trained representatives who really know our products and our community.

“We’re also using this opportunity to raise the level of technology we use to find solutions to customer problems,” Ellwood said. “For example, the center will be capable of communicating with readers by whatever medium they find most convenient: phone, email, live chat or on social media, such as Facebook and Twitter.”

The new Consumer Solutions Center is scheduled to open Monday, March 28. It will employ 31 customer service representatives (who will be represented by Teamsters Local 372) and three supervisors.

The center, available at 1-800-395-3300, will be staffed:

  • Mondays – Wednesdays: 8 a.m. – 5 p.m.
  • Thursdays and Fridays: 6 a.m. – 5 p.m.
  • Sundays: 7 a.m. – noon

Since December 2007, customer service functions for the Detroit newspapers have been handled at a service center in Tulsa, Oklahoma, which also served other newspapers owned by Gannett Co, Inc., the owner of the Detroit Free Press. That center will close on Monday, March 28.
