A dragon boat is a long canoe propelled by 20 paddlers, along with a steer in the stern and a drummer in the boat. The dragon boat team is dedicated to changing the image of breast cancer survivors in our communities and the world by showing that survivors can lead full, active lives after breast cancer; network positively with other survivors; provide an alternative forum as a “floating support group;” expand horizons by trying something new and exciting; keep fit and healthy to reduce stress; and most important, have fun. Hope Afloat USA provides team members the opportunity to share new goals and experiences and build a new commonality, which enriches and strengthens the ties among the group.

For 10 years, the team has remained true to its mission statement: “To help survivors of breast cancer make positive emotional, spiritual, and physical changes in their lives through the ancient sport of dragon boat racing. Hope Afloat encourages survivors, regardless of age or athletic ability, to ‘awaken the dragon within’ by providing them with hope, support, camaraderie, and adventure.”

Hope Afloat USA welcomes all breast cancer survivors to come down to the Schuylkill River and take a seat in the boat. Paddles Up! For more information about Hope Afloat USA, visit our website at www.hopeafloatusa.org.
