First-Ever Hula Boot Camp Debuts to Fredonia, Kansas Region
FREDONIA, Kan., May 19, 2011 /PRNewswire/ — When Kerry Holyoak moved from the exotic island of Saipan to Fredonia, Kan. in 2006, she left behind 20 years of Tahitian and hula dancing, specifically with the Te Kana Hau Nui Dancers of Saipan. Entertaining with the highly esteemed performance group had become Holyoak’s passion, but it was another kind of love, a marriage in fact, that drew Holyoak to move to Kansas to be with her husband in Fredonia. Now, along with her daughters, Holyoak has recently begun introducing Tahitian and hula dancing to the local region, bringing a bit of Saipan to America’s heartland.
This coming July, Holyoak will hold the first-ever Hula Boot Camp (http://www.hulabootcamp.com), an intensive, weeklong dance camp for girls ages 9 and older. Throughout the week, campers will learn about Pacific island cultures, intensive Tahitian and hula dance techniques, plus how to weave traditional haku leis. Taking place July 18-22 at the Bacani Hotel in Fredonia, this fun-filled summer camp will end on Friday evening with the girls presenting their new talents at a recital/luau for their parents and the general public.
Two options are available for campers: a day camp program and an overnight program. The day program includes dance instruction and lei weaving materials while the overnight program also includes accommodations, meals, evening activities and female chaperones. A fabulous way to get fit and bond with other girls in just one week, Hula Boot Camp will also help girls develop life skills such as teamwork and self-esteem.
“Tahitian and hula dancing are hard work, but they provide a fantastic workout that’s just a blast,” says Holyoak, who also owned and operated a successful ballet school in Saipan. “I am planning to cram a lot of learning, fun and exercise into a short five-day course. When it’s over, the girls will be able to perform a short exhibition show and display two methods of island dancing plus know how to interact with the audience.”
Apart from her new Hula Boot Camp and other recent dance performance efforts, Holyoak has officially formed the Te Kana Hau Nui Dancers of Fredonia. The dancers will perform at upcoming local events, including the Fredonia Homecoming Parade and the Neewollah Parade.
