Profile America — Friday, September 9th. Some 100-thousand people will be descending on Kennett Square, Pennsylvania this weekend for the 26th Annual Mushroom Festival. This is appropriate, because September is National Mushroom Month, and Kennett Square bills itself as the mushroom capital of the world. Activities include a soup cook off, cooking and growing demonstrations, and farm tours, as well as entertainment, a parade, and a car show. Mushrooms are an important salad ingredient and add interest to many other meals. They are one of the few foods rich in vitamin D. Last year, nearly 800 thousand tons of mushrooms were grown in the U.S. The annual U.S. crop is valued at upwards of a billion dollars. Profile America is produced by the U.S. Census Bureau: Measuring America–People, Places, and Our Economy.
