The SME Student Chapter at Catolica University in Peru is now a year old. And it has been a year of intense activities. The chapter was founded in January 2005 with only 18 members, and now there are more than 40.

Two members, Paulo Chirinos and Rosa Maria Rojas, participated in the intercollegiate mining competition in Reno, NV. Twenty students attended the SME annual lunch at the Country Club hotel in Lima, Peru, and 10 were present at the Mining Environmental Consress at the Eima Marriot hotel in July.

Thirty student members participated in the Peruvian Mining Convention last September that took place in Arequipa and 12 visited the Antamina mining port at Huarmey during the annual field trip.

The chapter also hosted two special guests that offered interesting conferences - Augusto Baertl, past president of the Antamina Mine and professor William Chavez from New Mexico Tech.

SME student chapter members at Catolica University in Peru welcome 10 new members and celebrate their first anniversary with a beer and sausage party at the Peruvian Institute of Mining Engineers.

The last activity in 2005 was the Beer and Sausage Party held at the Peruvian Institute of Mining Engineers in December. Mario Cedron, mining coordinator at the university, acted as chef, and a mine-rescue contest was held. At the party, the chapter welcomed 10 new members. The chapter at Catolica University is one of the fastest growing student chapters within SME.
