Apr. 8--MIDDLETOWN -- Much has been made of efforts to provide food for the locked-out workers of AK Steel Corp., who have been out of work for more than a month.
But Armco Employees Independent Federation members aren't the only ones in need of assistance. Their friends with four legs and a tail are hungry as well.
To that end, locked-out employee Andrea Gansheimer, who has five dogs, has helped initiate Operation Help the Pets to ensure the workers' pets also have food.
"It was just because I have dogs myself and mine are pretty much top priority," she said. "It might benefit others whose dogs' might end up in a shelter, and I didn't want to see that happen because the shelters are already overcrowded." Donors have been dropping off more than $500 worth of pet food over the past 20 days, Gansheimer said.
In addition, companies, including Kroger stores at Towne Boulevard and Tylersville Roads, West Side Feed on Trenton-Franklin Road and Diver's Garden and Pet Supplies on First Avenue also have provided pet food.
When food comes in, it goes quickly, Gansheimer said.
Other AEIF members said they appreciate her efforts.
"I think it's great," said Gary Parks, who has two dogs and three cats.
"Whatever we can get helps. Dogs need to eat, too.""We can't afford to feed ourselves, so we can't feed our dogs," said Shelley Gates.
