May 8--Alfred Golden, a member of the Greater Miami Jewish Federation board of directors, who enjoyed philanthropic work, died of cancer Saturday. He was 89 and lived in Aventura.
Golden was president of the Coalition for the Advancement of Jewish Education, president of the Jewish National Fund of Miami-Dade and vice president of the Jewish Education Available to Every Jew in North America.
"Jewish education meant a lot to him," said his wife, Fruma Golden. "He did so much, from getting teachers to Jewish schools, organizing the men's club luncheon and coordinating a golf tournament."
Golden was born April 24, 1917, in Brooklyn. He earned a bachelor's degree from the University of Alabama and worked as a clinical psychologist for the U.S. Army in the late 1930s.
"He was involved in every facet of Jewish community life," said Stephen Cypen, of the Miami Jewish Home and Hospital for the Aged. "He was a princely guy."
Golden owned the Golden Press, a lithography company in New York. After selling it, he joined Kinney Service Corp., as personnel director.
"He was a great public speaker full of ideas," Fruma Golden said. "Everybody knew he was there, when he was there."
Golden began to work in the funeral-home business after getting a job with Riverside Memorial Chapel in Manhattan.
He moved to North Miami Beach in 1965 to work in public relations for Riverside Memorial Chapel of Florida. He later became the vice president of the Jewish Home and Hospital for the Aged in Douglas Gardens.
"He was the sweetest volunteer for decades and was quick with a joke," Cypen said.
In 1984, Golden became the president of the cemetery division for Levitt-Weinstein.
"He lived to do for others and derived pleasure from doing so," said Murray Ruben, a former business associate.
Golden also spent his free time as vice chairman of the International Hillel Foundation for nine years, and member of the board of directors of the National Board United Synagogue and the Aventura Turnberry Jewish Center.
He is survived by his wife and sons, Jeffrey Golden and Kenneth Golden.
Services will be held today at 2 p.m at Levitt-Weinstein at Beth David Chapel, 3201 N. 72nd Ave., in Hollywood.
