Truck Accident Cuts GCI Services in Mat-Su
By Andrew Wellner, Anchorage Daily News, Alaska
Mar. 23–WASILLA — A dump truck cut a GCI fiber-optic line near Wasilla today, knocking out Internet, cable TV and long-distance phone service to the telecom company’s Mat-Su customers, a spokesman said.
The accident occurred about 10 a.m. off Seward-Meridian Parkway, said David Morris, spokesman for General Communication Inc.
The affected span crossed Palmdale Drive near the intersection of Seward-Meridian and Bogard Road. A half-dozen GCI vans and some trucks were parked at the scene as technicians ran cables and climbed ladders.
Morris said he couldn’t yet estimate how long the outage would last or how many customers were affected.
“It’s certainly going to be the Palmer-Wasilla greater area, so it will probably extend up to Big Lake and that area,” Morris said.
