U.S., Spain Tell Venezuela to Lift TV Ban
June 2, 2007
The United States and Spain have called for Venezuela to restore a private TV network’s broadcasting privileges, El Pais reported Saturday.
U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice criticized the decision by Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez to pull the plug on RCTV last month.
We called on the Venezuelan government to reverse course and reopen the independent TV station there and cease these attacks on the free press, said Rice from the Spanish capital, where she was meeting her Spanish counterpart.
The leftist Chavez decided not to renew RCTV’s license to broadcast, saying the station’s programming was promoting unrest.
