‘Closer’ Premiere Draws 8.8 Million
By Ted Cox
Remotely interesting: Cable households like Kyra Sedgwick. The season premiere of her series “The Closer” pulled in 8.8 million viewers Monday, which TNT says makes it the top-rated cable series ever. The debut of Treat Williams’ hospital drama “Heartland” held on to 4.3 million viewers.
WMAQ Channel 5 was named TV Station of the Year in the Illinois Broadcasters Association Silver Dome Awards last week. Channel 5 also won best late newscast. WGN Channel 9′s Larry Potash was named best anchor and Tom Skilling best weather forecaster.
“The N Beat” on WLS Channel 7 looks at local Latin music at 6 p.m. Saturday. …” Simon Schama’s Power of Art” examines Caravaggio at 10 p.m. Monday on WTTW Channel 11.
End of the dial: WTMX 101.9-FM was declared Radio Station of the Year in the Silver Domes, with Kathy Hart and Eric Ferguson best broadcast team and best morning show. WBBM 780-AM’s Julian Nieh was named best station personality.
WXRT 93.1-FM holds another of its “Live From the Archives” weekends starting at 1 p.m. today. Once again, I request Richard Thompson’s in-studio performance of “1952 Vincent Black Lightning.”

So bad it’s good
Watch the once-talented British comedian Dudley Moore reduce himself to self-parody as the rich title souse in “Arthur.” Moore’s grating cackle will make you want to put a foot through the TV screen by the time it’s over. John Gielgud pretty much steals the show in the stereotypical role of the stuffy butler. It’s at 9 p.m. today on TV Land.
