Salt Lake Community College has been announced as a Utah Business 2011 Green Business award winner. The 2011 Green Business awards recognizes organizations that have made admirable green efforts in the State of Utah.
The College was recognized for its leadership and teaching in the fields of energy management and green technologies that promote environmental sustainability.
SLCCâs Green Academyâ”an academic entity that houses numerous programs in alternative and renewable energy fieldsâ”offers courses in fields such as Electric Power Technology, Green Retrofitting, Lineman Apprenticeship, Smart Grid Technology, Solar Photovoltaic Systems, and CNG certification that provide students with the knowledge and skills to prepare them for emerging opportunities inâ˜greenâ technologies.
Beginning in 1995, the College started recycling paper and cardboard; the institution has improved its recycling program each year and now boasts a campus-wide recycling program that collects more than 1,500 bins and accepts more than 30 products.
Recently, the College has undertaken a massive recycling effort. The 485,000 pounds of material the College recycled in the first eight months of 2011 alone is equivalent in weight to about three 747 airplanes. The 485,000 pounds represents a 300 percent increase over SLCCâs entire 2009 output.
The College has also made strides with alternative fuels; 25 percent of the vehicle fleet is comprised of alternative-fuel vehicles, which includes: electric, hybrid, E85, dual fuel, and CNG.
As part of the Green Business award, the College will also be honored at an awards luncheon at the Grand America Hotel in Salt Lake City on November 17.
