Bay of Fundy Nova Scotia garnered millions of votes in the new seven wonders of nature campaign

Despite a strong international bid in the New7Wonders of Nature campaign, provisional results show the Bay of Fundy has not been named to the final top seven. Bernard Weber, Founder of the New7Wonders Foundation made the announcement today in Zurich, Switzerland at 7:07 pm GMT. The Bay of Fundy was Canadaâs finalist among the top 28 contenders.

The Bay of Fundy Tourism partnership has worked tirelessly over the last two years to let the world know that the Bay of Fundy is a truly unique natural wonder of the world, worthy of this international recognition. The New 7 Wonders campaign garnered millions of votes from around the globe for the Bay of Fundy Nova Scotia.

New Brunswick Premier, David Alward and Nova Scotia Premier, Darrell Dexter have championed the Bay of Fundy throughout the new 7 wonders of nature campaign.

âœAnyone who experiences the Bay of Fundy knows it is a winner and a true natural wonder, and thanks to this global contest more people will have that chance,â said Premier Alward. âœWe know the name recognition and awareness that the Bay of Fundy has achieved by participating in this campaign will bring an increase of visitors to the region. It has put the Bay on the map as a world-class destination.â

âœWe would like to thank everyone who has voted and spread the word about the beauty and power of the Bay of Fundy,â said Premier Dexter. âœWe have seen an overwhelming level of support from across the country, and around the world, but particularly here in Atlantic Canada.â

Six communities along the Bay of Fundy are planning celebrations to mark the importance of being included in the New7Wonders of Nature campaign. The New Brunswick towns of Alma, St. Martins and St. Andrews, and Digby, Windsor and Parrsboro in Nova Scotia will set off firework displays on Sunday, November 13 at 7:00 pm AST.

âœCongratulations to the top seven finalistsâ said Terri McCulloch, Executive Director of Bay of Fundy Tourism. âœIt has been an honour to share the international stage in this final phase of the campaign with such prestigious destinations. Everyone around the Bay of Fundy is standing a little taller today.â

Over the next six weeks, the provisional results will be officially verified and independently audited. The winners will be officially recognized with an official inauguration ceremony attended by Bernard Weber.

About the Bay of Fundy

The Bay of Fundy is a 270 km (170 mile) long ocean bay that stretches between the provinces of New Brunswick and Nova Scotia on Canadaâs east coast. The Bay of Fundy is best known for the highest tides in the world and has been compared, in marine biodiversity, to the Amazon Rainforest. The Bay is the summer feeding area for half the worldâs population of endangered North Atlantic Right Whales and 12 other whale species. It is home to the worldâs most complete fossil record of the âœCoal Ageâ (300 million years ago) as well as Canadaâs oldest dinosaurs. The Bay of Fundy is home to two UNESCO Biosphere Reserves (Bay of Fundy & Southwest Nova) as well as the Joggins Fossil Cliffs UNESCO World Heritage Site and the Stonehammer Geopark in Saint John.
