How important is exercise in the workplace? A six month study monitored 18 employees with treadmill desks who were given wireless headsets in order to walk and talk. The results showed that short exercise breaks reduces depression, helps people be more productive and creates an energy high. Doesn’t that sound like a great way to start a new year?!
At the beginning of the year people often seek out new ways to get in shape. There is a solution that doesn’t involve an intricate system like a treadmill desk (seen here in the New York Times: (http://nyti.ms/vsZ0pQ), or hitting the gym and burning out by January 31st. How about “sweatworking”? It’s becoming a hit way to do business and socialize among health-conscious professionals and Dr. Bonnie Eaker Weil says it’s the perfect thing to take up in the new year: “Instead of taking clients out to dinner and drinks – which can be expensive and calorie-intensive – why not get active together?”
Sweatworking is the perfect solution for people trying to save the company money on pricey client meals, or for business owners who want to start off the new year with a lean budget and physique. If clients aren’t a part of your job, workers can still integrate a workout into the workplace. People can take short exercise breaks which increase endorphins and release stress. The endorphins felt while working out are known to reduce depression, make people more productive, and lead to a better mood even into night once they’ve left work. If possible, walk and talk at the same time and sit on an exercise ball instead of a chair.
And there are plenty of post-work work-outs that fill the needs of networkers. “Look up groups for like-minded professionals in your area,” suggests Dr. Bonnie. Finding people in a similar career field who like enjoy similar activities – like hiking, skiing, or dancing for example – can be beneficial on multiple levels. “This type of sweatworking ensures that people stay fit, but it can also lead to new friendships and potentially even new professional opportunities.”
So if you want to hit the gym in the new year, consider bringing the gym to the office … or the “office” to the gym!
