Through ritual and ceremony, Sobonfu Somé, destined from birth to teach the ancient wisdom, ritual and practices of her ancestors to those in the West, will guide you on a journey into the heart of what it means to form community, to be a part of something that has the potential to extend beyond an individual human lifespan.
This workshop is designed for those wanting to more fully serve their community and engage in a higher levels of community connection.
In times of transformation, community becomes the olive leaf, the tool of nonviolent action that moves the people toward equanimity, peace, and ultimately a place of support for each of us to do our work in the world.
“Community” from an indigenous cultural perspective, is nothing new, and has always been the primary basis for the expression of everything important in life. The wealth of the individual is measured by the wealth of the community as a whole. And the true wealth and longevity of the community ultimately depends on its connection to the world of the unseen, the spirit world. For it is there that we find our kinship with the natural world that provides everything we need to survive.
With a connection to the natural world, the community has the strength and integrity it needs to avoid the abuses of power we have always witnessed in secular and religious society. As we move into 2012, we are entering a time of great change. We will need a strong and lasting community to get through the worst of it, to find sanity and the healing we will need as we meet on the front lines of great change.
“This is a teacher who can help us put together so many things that our modern Western World has broken…” — Alice Walker, Author of The Color Purple.
Author and Workshop teacher Sobonfu Somé says, “There is a deep longing among people in the West to connect with something bigger — with community and spirit. People know there is something missing in their lives, and believe that the rituals and ancient ways of the village offer some answers.” Sobonfu is one of the foremost voices in African spirituality to come to the west. Destined from birth to teach the ancient wisdom, ritual and practices of her ancestors to those in the West, Sobonfu, whose name means “keeper of the rituals” travels the world on a healing mission sharing the rich spiritual life and culture of her native land Burkina Faso.
This program will begin on Friday evening, with an introductory program open to the larger community, from 7-9PM.
