Martin Seif, Ph.D., ABPP, nationally known expert on fears of flying, announces the creation of Freedom To Fly Now, an organization to help people overcome their fears of flying with weekend group workshops in New York that include a commercial airplane flight.
The first workshop takes place at LaGuardia Airport in New York on September 15-16, 2012 and includes a round-trip flight from LaGuardia to Washington, DC with Dr. Seif and staff on board.
As a pioneer in modern anxiety disorder treatment, Dr. Seif co-founded the Anxiety Disorders Association of America (now renamed as the Anxiety and Depression Association of America). He is also Associate Director of the Anxiety and Phobia Treatment Center at White Plains Hospital.
Dr. Seif is no stranger to flying with patients. For the past 13 years, he has run the Freedom To Fly program (Freedom To Fly Now is not affiliated with Freedom to Fly) that also includes a round trip graduation flight. Dr. Seif maintains a specialty practice in Anxiety Disorders in Manhattan, New York and Greenwich, Connecticut. As an expert on fears of flying, he has been interviewed on the subject for CNN, New York Times and The Wall Street Journal.
Freedom To Fly Now support staff includes Judy Chessa, LMSW, coordinator of the Anxiety & Phobia Treatment Center at White Plains hospital, and retired American Airlines pilot Captain Dick Bracken with over 21,000 professional flying hours.
“Flying is considered the one of the safest forms of transportation. Despite the airline’s remarkable safety record, it is estimated that 20% of people fear flying to the extent that they limit travel because of these fears,” says Martin Seif.
Freedom To Fly Now workshop participants will learn to identify the triggers that cause their fears, while acquiring skills to manage and overcome them. Results from the workshop may reduce or eliminate the fear that ground people from the expanded freedom to experience adventure and travel that flying offers.
