Harrowing Adventures of Firefighter Chronicled in New Book
Author and volunteer firefighter Daniel B. McVey shares stories from his time as a fireman
FLORAL PARK, N.Y. (PRWEB) August 28, 2012
Becoming a firefighter was a childhood dream for author Daniel B. McVey. “I wanted to be a volunteer fireman since childhood and took charge of it after I took a CPR course.” In his new book, Breath of Life: The Life of a Volunteer Firefighter (published by iUniverse) McVey tells the story of a volunteer ï¬reï¬ghter´s life as an EMT and a ï¬reman, chronicling the harrowing stories of saving lives and facing death on a daily basis.
In Breathe of Life, McVey also shares stories of the dedication and professionalism of his comrades. He describes the small village on Long Island called Floral Park, where he belonged to the Rescue Company of the Floral Park Fire Department.
He found a pulse and saw signs of respiration. We quickly wheeled her into the ambulance. We hooked her up to the EKG monitor. She had a very slow heart rate, which is known as bradycardia, but it slowly climbed back to a more normal rate. Kevin Tholl had heard the second call for a cardiac arrest and had responded to the scene in his car. He now jumped into the ambulance and read the EKG strip.
“Boy, she must go to church every Sunday,” he said. In other words, she was lucky to still be alive.
When asked what he´d like readers to take away from his writing, he was rather inspiring noting, “I would like to see young readers develop interest in entering the volunteer fire service if available in their communities.”
The stories included in Breath of Life provide an intimate view of the dangers these heroes faced as volunteers who also had full-time jobs.
