Benefits of LAP-BAND Surgery for Seniors Often Outweigh the Risks

October 11, 2012

Obese seniors can experience the same benefits as their younger peers when undergoing bariatric surgery at LAP-BAND VIP, including longer life expectancy. According to a new study, the elderly are living longer lives, but more are obese than previous generations. Senior citizens who weigh 100 pounds or more than their ideal weight and meet all other criteria can enjoy a life free of the struggle imposed by excess pounds.

In many cases, obese seniors will not pursue weight loss surgery for fear of rejection, insurance concerns, or doubts about whether it will benefit them. Morbidly obese older adults can qualify for bariatric surgery if it is determined that surgery will add years to their life. The benefits the elderly can expect from LAP-BAND surgery include the improvement of obesity-related conditions, such as type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and sleep apnea.

Los Angeles bariatric surgeon Dr. Hooman Shabatian of LAP-BAND VIP said every patient´s circumstances are unique, and seniors aren´t excluded from bariatric surgery if it is determined that their quality of life can be improved through surgical intervention.

“As we age, the probability of getting a chronic disease goes up, and certain conditions, such as heart disease, diabetes, and joint pain, respond well to weight loss.” said Dr. Shabatian. “Any surgery is a tradeoff between the potential risks and complications versus the anticipated benefits.”

According to a 2012 study conducted by the National Institutes of Health, more seniors are living longer, yet more are obese than ever before. Government researchers have found that 38 percent of senior citizens were considered obese between 2009 and 2012, but only 22 percent of seniors were obese between 1988 and 1994. For seniors who need to lose a drastic amount of weight, Medicare provides coverage for gastric bypass and LAP-BAND surgery for patients. Other criteria imposed by Medicare for weight loss surgery include previous weight loss efforts and likelihood to comply with their physician´s diet and exercise program. Patients with obesity-related health conditions which can be positively impacted by losing weight are also considered possible candidates.

The LAP-BAND procedure involves implanting an inflatable silicone band around the upper part of the stomach like a watch around a wrist. This band restricts food intake but has no effect on the absorption of nutrients. A small port is placed under the skin which has access to the band. By injecting fluid into the port, the band is tightened which constricts food intake. If the band is too tight, the doctor will take out fluid to loosen it, which allows the patient to eat more.

Patients must clearly understand what they can expect before, during, and after surgery. The post-operative diet and exercise program is key in achieving success in weight loss, so the surgeon will carefully evaluate the personal history of a potential candidate to see if compliance might be a concern. Also, patients must be willing to set frequent follow-up appointments to have their LAP-BAND fills and adjustments.

The benefits experienced by LAP-BAND patients affect both their medical profile and general well-being. Medical benefits seniors can expect include remission of obesity-related health conditions after losing weight, and quality of life improvements, due to increased mobility and better self-image. Seniors who are approved for weight loss surgery can expect their physician to discuss all of their concerns regarding expectations and possible complications from surgery.
