Metal-On-Metal Hip Resurfacing Not Recommended in Women, New Study Finds

October 13, 2012

A new Lancet study recommends against metal-on-metal hip resurfacing procedures for women and smaller men due to high failure rates, Bernstein Liebhard LLP reports.

New York, NY (PRWEB) October 11, 2012

A new study on metal-on-metal hip resurfacing finds “unacceptably high” failure rates in women, and recommends against the procedure for women and smaller men. Bernstein Liebhard LLP reports on the October 2, 2012 study published in The Lancet medical journal. The study analyzed data from the National Joint Registry for England and Wales, and studied approximately 32,000 patients who underwent hip resurfacing between 2003 and 2011. The five-year failure rate for metal-on-metal hip resurfacing procedures was approximately 5 percent, compared to less than 2 percent for traditional total hip replacement procedures.

Lead researcher Professor Ashley Blom concluded: “Resurfacing failure rates in women were unacceptably high. In view of these findings, we recommend that resurfacing procedures are not undertaken in women.” Researchers also advised caution in resurfacing procedures for smaller men. Only middle-aged men of larger stature, approximately a quarter of the male patient population, had failure rates comparable to that of total hip replacement surgery.

“This latest study is only one of a long list emphasizing the risks of metal-on-metal hip replacement devices.” said Bernstein Liebhard LLP, a nationwide law firm representing clients who sustained injuries from a variety of metal-on-metal hip systems. A recently released annual report from the Australian Orthopaedic Association National Joint Replacement Registry also found that metal-on-metal bearing surfaces in total hip replacements had higher failure rates than other bearing surfaces. According to the report, “This increased rate of revision is evident in most metal on metal prostheses. This has been identified by the Registry for a number of years and the use of large head metal on metal bearings has now almost completely ceased in Australia.”
